Suppliers Segment Benchmarking for IT Peripherals

A FMCG client approached us to identify and evaluate different types of suppliers operating in the market offering IT peripherals. Client has been engaged with different OEMs for IT peripherals leaving a large number of items for ad-hoc buying. To reduce the spend leakage and increase the total managed spend, our objective was to understand the supply landscape and provide the client with a comprehensive visibility of different types of vendors offering IT peripherals to B2B customers.

Argha team identified below four types of vendors which were relevant for the client's requirement.

  1. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs)

  2. Wholesale Distributors

  3. Value-added Resellers (VARs)

  4. Online Marketplaces

Once the above vendor segments were identified, Argha team conducted a detailed scope and spend assessment to shortlist VARs and Online Marketplace to be engaged by the client with following findings:

  • In case of OEMs, there would be multiple suppliers considering the SKUs required by the client.

  • In case of wholesale distributors, client would have less bargaining power and relatively low service quality.

  • With VARs, client would be able to get competitive pricing with high value added services.

  • For low-value and low-volume purchases, online marketplaces were found to provide maximum value.

Once these findings were presented to the client, they requested us to do a quick comparison between OEMs and VARs.

With all the details we provided to the client, they proceeded to next steps by requesting us to shortlist relevant and potential VARs for RFP process. This exercise led to an estimated saving of 7% for the client.
